Greeting

Here in London, far across the sea from Japan, a small yet sacred Jinja has come into being. Our enshrined spirit (go-bunrei) has been granted by Naramachi Tenjinja, a shrine with a deep history and venerable heritage said to have been founded approximately 950 years ago, during the Heian period, by a Shinto priest of Kasuga Taisha.

Enshrined in a sacred land known since the Nara period as “Heijō-no-Asuka,” situated in the sanctuary of Kasuga Taisha, Naramachi Tenjinsha remains warmly cherished and devoutly preserved by the local community to this day. The main deities (kami) enshrined are Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto, the deity of medicine who assisted Okuninushi-no-Mikoto in nation-building, and Sugawara no Michizane, renowned as a deity of learning.

It is our heartfelt wish that London Eitoku Jinja will, like Naramachi Tenjinsha, become a cherished place that is warmly embraced and long protected by the local community.
